Henry the Heron

Yesterday, after my sister, my brother-in-law, and I took my dad to dinner for Father's Day, we went back to his house.  He said he wanted to show us the Heron that's at the pond.  So, we walk down to the pond,  and my dad doesn't even get to the shore and all of a sudden this Heron is flying across the pond towards my dad.  We couldn't believe it.  That Heron knows my dad and that when he comes down to the pond, he's going to throw food out and then the Blue Gill will come to top and he can hunt.

Here's the pond so you can see how big it is.
At first, the Heron is off to the side and really hesitant to get close to us.  My dad says, "he doesn't know you guys." My sister and  I laughed and were like, "oh, OK, dad!" I mean seriously.  It's a freaking bird!  We back up though to see if he'll get closer.  I kid you not, as soon as we backed away, this Heron walked right over to my dad.

Look how close he is!

Even the not-so baby ducks came right up to the shore and were eating the food my dad was throwing out.  It was hilarious.  We couldn't believe it.  Once the Blue Gill started coming to the top, the Heron was ready to hunt.  It was the coolest thing.  He would stand really still and tilt his beak to the side because when he goes in to the kill the fish, he goes in at an angle.  He got three flipping fish while we were standing there.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but it was definitely one of the coolest things ever.
